Despite watching the 2012 London Olympics until midnight and then final packing, I was able to wake to my radio alarm at 6:45 am.
I asked myself: What’s today?… Thursday.
What am I doing today?… Going to Italy.
What shall I wear?… The clothes I chose a month ago.
I left my room to wake up Marie. She was already up and packed.

Our SuperShuttle driver, Edward from Uganda, commented that we lived “at the end of Earth.” After making two more stops along the way, we arrived at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
At the United check-in line, the electronic ticketing kiosks were down, so all passengers had to get in line to obtain our boarding passes.
Not long after we were airborne, the movies started, along with the snacks, beverages and meals. How many movies to Frankfurt? Five with episodes of television shows in between:
- Lucky One (The scenes in the trailer never came up.)
- Three Stooges (So bad, I opted to read.)
- Episode of Big Bang Theory (The one where Leonard daydreams that he asks Penny to dinner.)
- Atlantis
- Episode of 30 Rock
- Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (Pretty good, but highly improbable.)
While we were eating ice cream, Marie tapped me on the shoulder to show that we were flying over Greenland.
- Wrath of the Titans (Really good.)
- Episode of the Mentalist (I opted to read.)
Crossed the dateline…
